The scholarship programme was announced during a courtesy visit by the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, to the Minister of Information and National Orientation in Abuja. According to the government, the initiative reflects the strength of bilateral relations between the two countries and aligns with efforts to build capacity in critical sectors of the economy.

Officials noted that the programme targets key industries such as petroleum and solid minerals, which remain central to Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda. The scholarships are expected to create a steady pipeline of skilled professionals capable of driving growth across these sectors.

The Minister emphasised that the initiative goes beyond education support, positioning it as a long-term investment in Nigeria’s workforce. He added that the programme is structured to run annually, with 50 Nigerian students expected to benefit each year.

The Saudi envoy disclosed that the scholarships will be administered through the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and will cover tuition, travel, accommodation, and monthly stipends, ensuring full financial support for beneficiaries.

He described the programme as part of broader efforts to deepen cooperation between both countries, particularly in education, trade, and investment, while also strengthening people-to-people ties.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining and expanding bilateral engagements with Saudi Arabia, including the implementation of existing agreements across sectors.

Beyond education, both parties highlighted opportunities to enhance economic cooperation, focusing on unlocking investment flows and strengthening institutional partnerships.

The development underscores a growing trend in international collaboration in skills development, particularly in specialised fields critical to industrial growth and economic transformation.
